  • Do I need a waiver?

    Yes, everyone who enters Origin must have a waiver, even if they’re not climbing.

  • Why do I need a waiver?

    Climbing has inherent risks. All Origin guests, including climbers, belayers, and observers, must acknowledge the risks and accept responsibility and liability for themselves while participating in any activity within our facility.

  • Can I fill out a waiver for someone else?

    If you are a parent or legal guardian of a participant then you may fill out their waiver. Under no other circumstances can you fill out a waiver for another person.

  • Where/How can I fill out a waiver?

    Waivers can be completed online or in person.

  • Do I have to fill out a waiver every time I come?

    No. As long as your waiver is completed correctly and legally you will only have to fill it out once. If you’re under 18 and a parent has filled out your waiver, you will be required to complete a new waiver for yourself once you turn 18.

  • Can anyone fill out a waiver?

    Minors, defined as anyone under the age of 18 years, can not fill out, initial, or sign their own waiver under any circumstances.

KIDS AND TEENS:

  • Can children climb at Origin?

    Yes! Kids love climbing and Origin welcomes all ages.

  • How old do children have to be to climb?

    Origin does not have age requirements. In general, most kids do not begin showing active and consistent interest in climbing until they’re 4 or 5 years old. However, we have seen kids as young as 18 months able to climb the walls. It all depends on each individual child. Climbing, like walking,comes to some earlier than others. The more a child sees other people climb, the more likely they are to express interest and attempt encourage more interest.

  • Who can fill out a waiver for my child?

    Only a parent or legal guardian may fill out a waiver for a child. This does NOT include other relatives, neighbors, friends, care givers, or non-legal guardians. Sorry, no exceptions.

  • Can my teenager fill out their own waiver?

    No. No one under the age of 18 years can fill out, initial or sign their own waiver. All minors must have a waiver filled out by a parent or legal guardian.

  • Can children climb by themselves?

    Children under the age of 14 years must have adult supervision. Children enrolled in an Origin Youth program will be supervised by an Origin staff instructor.

  • Will someone help my child?

    Origin offers a variety of youth programs that include an Origin staff instructor. If your child is visiting outside of a scheduled youth program then an Origin staff member will advise you on rules and safety precautions for assisting your own child, but will not provide additional instruction.

  • Can children climb anytime, or do we need an appointment?

    Children are always welcome at Origin and appointments are not required under most circumstances. In addition to our extensive bouldering area, children 30 lbs and over are welcome to use Auto-Belay machines, which do not require belay certification. However, please note that Origin instructors are only available to provide a belay service if scheduled in advance. Parents who are belay certified can belay their own children anytime.

  • Do I need a belay certification to belay my child?

    Yes. All belayers must be belay certified by an Origin staff member before using top ropes or lead climbing areas.

  • Can children belay? At what age?

    Children must be 14 years of age to learn how to belay or be belay certified at Origin.

  • Do children have to wear special shoes?

    Origin prefers that all climbers wear climbing shoes to prevent damage to our walls and to improve your climbing experience.

  • Do you have rental gear for children?

    Yes, we offer rental shoes and two types of harnesses specifically for children.

BELAY CERTIFICATION:

  • What is a belayer, or belay certification?

    In roped climbing, a belayer is the person who is attached to the opposite end of the rope from climber. It is their responsibility to handle the belay device, which prevents the climber from falling to the ground.

  • Does Origin require belay certification?

    Origin requires belay certification for both top rope and lead climbing.

  • What are the requirements for top rope belay certification?

    Origin requires all top rope belayers to use a Petzl GriGri or GriGri2. Belayers must demonstrate proficiency in loading the device, belaying and lowering the climber without removing their brake hand from the rope. Belayer must also demonstrate proficiency in tying into the rope using a retraced figure eight knot.

  • What are the requirements for lead climb/belay certification?

    Origin requires all lead climbers/belayers to use a Petzl GriGri or GriGri 2. Lead certification requires both climbing and belaying. For the climbing portion Leaders must demonstrate proficient and correct clipping technique, rope awareness, communication, and willingness to fall. For the belay portion Leaders will be required to demonstrate proficient ability to feed rope and belay while maintaining complete control of the brake line at all times. Belayers are also expected to demonstrate attentiveness, rope awareness, awareness of slack and fall potential, communication, and the ability to control an unannounced fall.

  • Is there a charge for belay certification?

    No, belay certification is free.

  • How long does belay certification take?

    Top rope belay certification usually takes no more than 5-10 minutes. Lead certification takes between 15 and 30 minutes on average.

  • Does Origin accept belay cards/certification from other gyms?

    No<

  • Do I need my own GriGri?

    No. Origin is happy to loan out our GriGris to anyone who has been belay certified. We only require a car key be provided as a deposit.

  • Do I need my own rope?

    No. Origin does not allow personal ropes. We provide lead and top ropes free of charge.

  • What happens if I don’t pass belay certification?

    If for any reason you are unable to meet the minimum requirements for belay certification, you are still welcome to climb at Origin. In addition to our enormous bouldering area, we also have several auto belay machines that don’t require certification. Our instructors will also work with you to determine whether again.

  • Do you offer belay classes?

FIRST TIME CLIMBERS:

  • What is bouldering?

    Bouldering is climbing on short walls, or boulders, without ropes and harnesses. Climbers reach the top and then jump down onto special cushioned padding that’s build around the boulder. Unique paths or routes to the top are called Problems and are graded and marked based on their level of difficulty.

  • What is an Auto-Belay?

    An Auto-Belay is a mechanical device that performs the same function as a human belayer, by providing a safe, controlled descent. We have 6 TruBlue Auto Belays at Origin, providing a safe and fun alternative to traditional roped climbing.

  • Do you take drop ins?

    Yes! Come in anytime. Fill out a waiver first to save time.

  • Do I need to be in good shape to climb?

    Nope, anyone can climb. Rock climbing is a very adaptive activity where you can pick your own adventure so to speak. And for most people, it’s mostly in the legs. If you can stand up, you can rock climb. There are even adaptive climbing techniques for people with physical disabilities.

    And at Origin we offer over 600 unique climbs on a variety of terrain, with grades ranging from the extremely easy to the insanely hard and everything in between. No matter who you are you think you can or can’t do, you can definitely climb.

  • Will someone show me what to do?

    On your first visit to Origin you’ll be given a comprehensive orientation that will include a tour of the facility, and basic instruction on how to identify routes and grades, use the equipment safely and start climbing. If you want more instruction we also offer a variety of both fitness and climbing classes.

  • What should I wear?

    There’s no specific uniform or dress code for climbing, but generally you’ll want to wear clothing that allows easy and full range movement. Women often wear yoga pants while men prefer hiking or athletic bottoms. We also require everyone, both men and women, to wear shirts at all times.

  • I have a disability or special need, can I still climb?

    Of course you can! Climbing is a highly adaptable activity. If you think you need special assistance, please contact us and we’ll ensure you have all the support and assistance you need to experience the joy of rock climbing.

Other:

  • Do you have showers? How much does it cost?

    Yes, we have beautiful showers available for our guests. Showers are free to all guests with the purchase of a day pass, punch pass or membership.

  • Do I have to pay just to watch or belay?

    No, we don’t charge for observers or belayers who aren’t climbing. But everyone in the building must have a valid electronic waiver.

  • Do you rent equipment for outside climbing?

    We have rental climbing shoes available for outside use. Sorry, no crash pads at this time.

  • I need to cancel my membership. What do I do?

    If for any reason you need to cancel your EFT membership at Origin, send an email to membership@originclimb.com with your name, member card #, and the reason for cancellation. Please include the date you would like your membership cancelled as well. Paid in full memberships can not be cancelled or refunded.
