WHAT IS THE FIRST THING I SHOULD LEARN?

Origin offers a variety of climbing styles, giving you several options on where to start your climbing education. As the largest bouldering gym in the region, many of our first-time guests start with fundamental movement techniques. Learning the basics of how to balance and move on the wall will allow you to get to the top of our boulders or auto-belays with relative ease. Another common first step is learning how to handle ropes and belay a partner. This is the traditional first step at many gyms and will allow you to climb on almost every wall, but it does require a partner.

WHY SHOULD I LEARN AT A CLIMBING GYM?

Climbing gyms are a convenient, hassle-free option for learning how to climb. Being indoors means that there are fewer variables to account for, like weather and remote access. Plus you won’t need to invest in a bunch of expensive gear as most gyms will rent everything you need for little to no charge occasionally. You will also have immediate access to experienced, knowledgeable staff to guide you through the process and answer all your questions. While climbing always carries inherent risk, climbing gyms reduce many of the hazards that you might encounter outdoors, by providing a well-maintained environment with standardized safety protocols and risk management strategies.

WHAT SHOULD I WEAR TO A CLIMBING CLASS? WHY?

Climbing is an athletic pursuit, so you want to be comfortable and have freedom of movement. Avoid wearing jewelry or accessories, and try to pick athletic our outdoor apparel that fits your form but doesn’t hinder movement. Remember that you may be wearing a harness with leg loops, so skirts, shorts, and kilts are a bad idea. Clothing that is lightweight, moisture-wicking and stretchy is ideal.

WHAT SHOULD I EAT BEFORE MY CLIMBING CLASS?

We recommend eating something nutritious about 2-3 hours before coming to the gym. This will give your body a chance to process food, digest it, and get fueled up before your session. Origin offers a variety of light, healthy snacks with protein and carbs if you get hungry during or after your climb. Staying hydrated is crucial, so be sure to drink plenty of water before, during and after your climbing.

WHAT SHOULD I EAT BEFORE I HEAD TO A CLIMBING COURSE?

We recommend eating well about two hours before coming to the gym. This will give your body a chance to process food, digest it, and get fueled up before your session. While you’re climbing, you can have something light and full of quick carbs with you just in case you need something recharge yourself. A GU Shot or a Cliff Shot Blok would be great choices. You should also drink lots of water before your session, during and after

BESIDES CLIMBING, WHAT ELSE CAN I LEARN AT A CLIMBING GYM?

As modern climbing gyms sprout up and grow to accommodate evolving communities, so do the variety of classes offered. Gyms, such as Origin, offer both yoga and fitness classes in addition to their climbing curriculums. Special events, clinics, and community activities with an assortment of subjects may also be offered. So Keep an eye on your climbing gym’s social media and website to stay up to date on the variety of classes and events they offer.

IN WHAT WAYS WILL INDOOR ROCK CLIMBING BENEFIT ME PHYSICALLY, MENTALLY AND SOCIALLY?

Climbing gyms are the perfect places to train. What you won’t find in any other environment than a climbing gym is accessibility to movement patterns, holds, and terrain that helps to prepare you for whatever your goal is. Indoor rock climbing is both a low heart rate cardio and a great aerobic exercise. You’ll burn fat, build muscle, improve coordination and balance, gain flexibility, and improve dynamic mobility. In addition to climbing walls, some climbing gyms offer full fitness accommodations such as weights and cardio machines to keep you fit. You can stack workouts when fitness equipment is at your disposal! At Origin, you can climb, hit the treadmill, lift and do yoga all in the same place for one membership.

Climbing also improves critical thinking and problem-solving skills as you learn to navigate routes and find your own ‘beta.’ Climbing can be emotionally beneficial both for learning to overcome fear, improving mental focus, and clearing your mind of excess ‘chatter.’

One of the best things about joining a climbing gym is having a place where you can be part of a community. Climbing gyms are an excellent point of contact for plugging into the scene in your area. You’re bound to meet some interesting and friendly characters.
