Origin offers a variety of climbing styles, giving you several options on where to start your climbing education. As the largest bouldering gym in the region, many of our first-time guests start with fundamental movement techniques. Learning the basics of how to balance and move on the wall will allow you to get to the top of our boulders or auto-belays with relative ease. Another common first step is learning how to handle ropes and belay a partner. This is the traditional first step at many gyms and will allow you to climb on almost every wall, but it does require a partner.
Climbing gyms are a convenient, hassle-free option for learning how to climb. Being indoors means that there are fewer variables to account for, like weather and remote access. Plus you won’t need to invest in a bunch of expensive gear as most gyms will rent everything you need for little to no charge occasionally. You will also have immediate access to experienced, knowledgeable staff to guide you through the process and answer all your questions. While climbing always carries inherent risk, climbing gyms reduce many of the hazards that you might encounter outdoors, by providing a well-maintained environment with standardized safety protocols and risk management strategies.
Climbing is an athletic pursuit, so you want to be comfortable and have freedom of movement. Avoid wearing jewelry or accessories, and try to pick athletic our outdoor apparel that fits your form but doesn’t hinder movement. Remember that you may be wearing a harness with leg loops, so skirts, shorts, and kilts are a bad idea. Clothing that is lightweight, moisture-wicking and stretchy is ideal.
We recommend eating something nutritious about 2-3 hours before coming to the gym. This will give your body a chance to process food, digest it, and get fueled up before your session. Origin offers a variety of light, healthy snacks with protein and carbs if you get hungry during or after your climb. Staying hydrated is crucial, so be sure to drink plenty of water before, during and after your climbing.
